Saturday’s high school roundup: Lowell’s 4×800 relay team wins, sets Meet of Champions record23:49 PM, Feb 22 2025
The Lowell High boys 4×800 relay team of Jovani Ubri, Raymond Dafe, Alex Rodgers and Abdul Jalloh set a meet record in winning at the Meet of Champions on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center.
Their clocking of 7 minutes, 56.24 seconds broke the record set in 2013. Lowell set that record as well.
Not to be outshone, the Billerica boys 4×200 relay team won in a time of 1:30.95 thanks to Jacob Peck, Dhaethmy Dorival, Ben Pena and Gryffin Bordeau.
Lowell’s Khai Yin was second in the 55-meter hurdles in a blazing time of 7.31. Ryan Kyle of Westford placed third in 7.46.
In the 600, Cole New of Ayer Shirley ran to second place in 1:21.43, while also excelling in the event from Lowell were Jalloh in fourth (1:22.75), Dafe in seventh (1:23.87) and Ubri in 14th (1:25.35).
In the 1,000, Shane Leslie of Billerica took sixth (2:32.71) and Lowell’s Rodgers placed eighth (2:33.31).
Billerica’s Dorival was ninth in the 300 in 35.59. In the mile, Mason Niles of Billerica crossed in 4:24.59 and Greyson Duane of Groton-Dunstable was 14th in 4:28.34. Henry Jacobsen of Parker Charter was ninth in the two mile in 9:29.30.
In the 300, Dorival placed ninth for Billerica in 35.59. In the long jump, Lowell’s Ethan Thevenin took ninth (21-3) and Lowell’s Emanuel Trinidad was fifth in the weight throw (56-10).
On the girls side, Billerica’s Nyrah Joseph produced a fantastic meet. She was third in the 55 hurdles in 8.31, third in the high jump (5-4) and 10th in the long jump (17-4). Her teammate, Lily Bower, was 11th in the long jump (17-3).
Excelling in the two mile was Emily Wedlake of Westford Academy, who crossed third in 10:51.00. Billerica’s duo of Gianna McGowan (11:01.74) and Caitlyn Donahue (11:08.92) were seventh and eight, respectively.
In the mile, Chelmsford’s Kate Leonard crossed in 5:12.28. Meghan McEleney of Groton-Dunstable claimed 11th in the 1,000 in 3:05.24. In other relay action, Billerica was ninth in the 4×800 (9:58.39) and Chelmsford placed 12th (10:07.74), and Lowell captured 11th in the 4×200 (1:48.45).
Division 1: Shawsheen Tech won its first Division 1 crown in exciting fashion.
Locked in a duel with Central Catholic, the Rams edged the Lawrence school, 106.5-157.5.
Individual champions for Shawsheen were Dante Giusti, Sid Tildsley and James Tildsley. Sid Tildsley won via forfeit at 138 to capture his fourth state title.
Giusti defeated defending state champ Cale Wood at Haverhill in the 120-pound title via a 11-3 major decision. James Tildsley took the 150 crown thanks to a 21-6 tech fall win over Troy Greaney of Leominster.
Logan Holmes gave the Rams valuable points by wrestling to the 165 championship match, where he fell 21-2 by technical fall to Joseph Baker of Beverly.
At 157 pounds, Michael Canada of Chelmsford was the runner-up, falling 4-2 in a decision to Central’s Caden Smith.
Chelmsford’s Thomas Brown added to his eye-popping career with another 285-pound state title. He defeated Alex Bajoras of St. John’s Prep in the final, 13-7.
Division 2: In Salem, Billerica’s Peter Rincan continued his dominant season as he pinned Steven Santiago of Holyoke to win the 120-pound title
Division 3: In Foxboro, Tewksbury repeated as state champions with a terrific performance.
The Redmen produced three individual champions – Nick Desisto ruled at 120 pounds, Jack Lightfoot was the 113-pound champ and Manny Mengata took the 215-pound title.
It was the third straight Division 3 title for Desisto and the second straight for Lightfoot. Tewksbury (116.5) edged Wakefield (113.0) for the team title.
New Hampshire: Pelham finished fourth at the Division 3 state championships, trailing only Bow, Winnisquam and Plymouth.
The Pythons crowned two champions. Phillip Smith won at 165 and Billy Nicolls upset the top seed seed from Plymouth at 190. Ben Maslanek battled to a second-place finish, while three-time state champ Liz Donovan fell to the eventual champion in her quest for title number four and took third at 126.
Joel Llibre was also third at 175. Victor Zannoni at 285 finished the place winners for Pelham by taking fourth.
Division 1: Four area girls captured Division 1 championships and Lowell made a spirited bid to repeat as team champion, but fell just short.
At 100 pounds, Greater Lowell Tech’s Lillie Normandie captured a 16-9 decision over Megan Rooney of Wellesley to capture the title. She is now a two-time state champ.
Brooke Lightfoot of Tewksbury pinned her opponent in the final to become the 114-pound champ. She became Tewksbury’s first female state champ.
At 165 pounds, Amanda Moundele of Lowell was the champion thanks to a pin at 1:26 of King Philip’s Samantha Westrom.
In an exciting match, Lowell’s Amelyiah Martinez repeated as the 235-pound champion thanks to a pin over Eglis Tuareza Clase of Springfield Central. Martinez, who is unbeaten this winter, ended the match in 1:12.
Lowell’s Sophira Sao was the 114-pound runner-up. She advanced to the final and fell by pin to Belmont’s Ava Svistunov.
Division 2: Billerica wrestled well and earned the runner-up spot (69), but couldn’t keep up with champion Putnam (119).
Division 3: Top-seeded senior Natalia Jaramillo captured the 126-pound title for Nashoba Tech by pinning all three of her opponents. It was the first girls state champion for the Westford school.
ST 58, Gr. Lawrence 47: Shawsheen Tech captured its third State Vocational championship in program history with the win over its CAC rival.
Bay Path 50, GLT 46: In a State Vocational semifinal clash, Greater Lowell Tech took a 40-39 lead with five minutes remaining, but turnovers proved costly Friday against top-seeded Bay Path.
Fourth-seeded Greater Lowell (14-6) played the hosts tough all night. A well-balanced scoring attack was led by Ava Mennella, Kendra O’Brien and Kat Muangvong. Mennella tallied 11 points and six steals, O’Brien compiled 11 points and eight rebounds, and Muangvong added 10 points and four assists.
Rowan Murphy, Jaylene Tatro and Laporsha Moses produced four points each for the Gryphons.
Dover 4, Alvirne/Milford 3: Despite Braydon Atwood breaking the program’s single-season goals mark, the Admirals were nipped on Senior Night.
Mason Komarek stopped 27 of 31 shots. Atwood finished with a goal and assist. Bryce Larco also scored. Setting up goals were Brandon Ganas, Dylan Macleod and Ryan Ricard.
ST 3, Blackstone 1: Led by Justin Thibert, who registered two goals and added an assist, Shawsheen Tech collected its second straight State Vocational title.
Josh Baker also scored against Blackstone Valley. Assisting on all three goals for the Rams was Jacoby Patterson.
